If you are due for a long distance move, you have no more time to waste. You should start planning the move right away. Nevertheless, this does not mean that you should go ahead and start packing all your belongings.
The first step is always to get rid of the things you will no longer need. Dispose of household items as well before you move so you would not have to haul them along with you. Take note that the fewer things you bring the simpler your move is. Household stuff can easily be replaced so you should just get new ones when you get to your new home. Anyway, you can sell your old ones and use the money from the sales and the savings to buy new stuff.
You should also decide whether you are going to hire a removals company. The truth is removal companies would be more efficient in helping you pack large items such as furniture and appliances. But you should do your part by packing jewelry and important documents and records yourself. You could also try to pack other regular and non-essential items in advance so you can save time and money as well.
To make the unpacking part easier too, make sure you have labeled all the boxes properly. Put your name on the boxes too just to be sure. Indicate which room each should go to and indicate the contents of each too. This way, finding things would be easier once you get to your new home. Unpacking would be easier too since all the boxes that needs to go to a specific room is already there.
